Argument:
Example from letter
Righteous rule of Chinese
  • If there is profit he shares it with the people, if there is harm, he removes it
Flattery
  • The kings of your honorable country by a tradition handed down from generation to generation have always been noted for their politeness and submissiveness
benefit of trade
  • The benefits of trade have been enjoyed by your rulers for 200 years
Greediness of those who trade in opium
  • Such persons who only care to profit themselves and disregard their harms to others are not tolerated by the laws of heaven
Those who sell Opium should receive the death penalty
  • All those people in China who sell opium or smoke opium should receive the death penalty. We trace the crime of those barbarians who through the years have been selling opium…
People who surrender will be excused from the law, meaning British give up
  • Those who voluntarily surrender there are still some circumstances to excuse their crime
England themselves banned the use of Opium while selling Opium to British while they continue to sell to China

Put yourselves in our shoes, what would you have done
  • Smoking of Opium very forbidden by your country
  • How much less to China

  • Suppose there were people from another country who carried opium for sale to England
Examine the trading systems more carefully and in detail
  • Your honorable rule have been originally strict and clear
People follow England’s Trading Rules, should follow China’s Trading Rules
  • He still has to obey English Laws; how much more should he obey in China the laws of the Celestial Dynasty
If the Opium trade is by mistake, those who confess will be pardoned
  • All those who from the period of the coming year (from England) bring opium to China by mistake, shall be exempt
The trade between China and British will stop if the opium is continued
  • If they wish to do business for a prolonged period, are required to obey our statues respectfully

Dear Qing Qian Long
Based on the letter from Lin Zixu, II have very much thought about and enjoyed the trade between our two countries, China and England benefiting each other. However to what point of fairness has the trade been? The balance of the scales shift towards the side of China more than the side of British for the past 200 years. It is time for the balance to shift towards England at this time. It is our manifest destiny, God’s Will for Britain to expand and conquer far off cultures in the world. China is no different from the rest, it is part of England’s responsibility to guide the Chinese. I will explain all there is for you to know and to tell your Celestial Court.
We British have been a powerful countries for hundreds of centuries. We have conquered lands far beyond the sea, and beyond the conquering, educated the natives and taught them how to be accustomed to our culture. Why do the natives accept being annexed? Because it is our technology which have been the reason for us to be capable of taking over. It is England’s job to show and teach those who are “lower” than us to make their lives better. And just how thankful are you Qing Qian Long towards England? We introduced steam power, cotton gins, and the beautiful miracle opium that you desire to be rid of only because of your son’s overdose.
Also, for the past centuries, you China have been doing nothing but taking silver from us and opium while we buy the precious silk, food, materials, and resources your country contains. It is because of England’s tolerance for the trade which have made your country very successful and rich. By taking away the opium, you only leave us with silver to barter with. How fair is that? How selfish is that? I understand opium can cause negative side effects, but we are not the ones telling the Chinese to take the drug, we simply provide it. Qing Qian Long, news has reached me that your son has died from an overdose of opium. It is very saddening to hear such news, but such tragedy has influenced your thinking. You are not acting in China’s best interest but your own personal interest.
England has been the world superpower since forever. We started the Industrial revolution and started advancements which have propelled England’s economy. Not only have there been advancements in just textiles, but also weapons. We have a strong military and strong organized system of fighting. Easily we can overtake China. However fortunately for you Qing Qian Long, the British will hesitate for now before helping you guys guide yourselves, because it is our responsibility to share the better culture. Your nation, your country, your people only ended up in such a situation because of your restrictions to contact the west. All this technology, advancements, and benefits you reject for a silly pride.
My last argument, if you Chinese are so superior towards us, restricting your trade with us and isolating yourselves because you find us Whites so inferior, how have you not be able to control the opium problem while we have been able to. The more inferior culture has their problem under control. So the question really is, which culture is more superior? If we don’t trade opium, then the other countries will. It is an international wide product, will you be able to stop the Dutch, the Spanish, and much more? I have the answer to that. It will be our responsibility to control and help the Chinese guide themselves soon, to fight against the Spheres of Influence that you harbor hates towards.
Sincerely Queen Victoria

1. Which 2 areas of the world are almost completely controlled by colonial powers? Does this answer agree with your answer to question 3 above in section A 'Imperialism Map' ?
Polynesia and Australia are two areas almost completely controlled by Europeans. Yes it agrees with the answer from section A.

d. Make some conclusions
Africa, Polynesia, and Austria are where natural resources are rich and plentiful. Nations raced to claim regions and sections for themselves in order to take advantage and exploit the land for a profit. It attracted multiple powers of the world which made the lands a target for subjugated rule. Britain was probably the most powerful at the time because they had the most colonies. Imperialism affected multiple territories, especially the ones captured.

d. Link to today
How did the Scramble for Africa in the 1800's and 1900's effect the current borders of Africa?
The boarders of the current Africa resemble what Africa was divided into during the Imperialistic movement. It seems like the division in Africa from the Belgian Conference stayed to even modern times, with some exceptions of new countries forming. Mostly, each region stayed and held the same boarders.
